money to pay for a washing machine

How Much Should You Pay For a Washing Machine?

The cost of washing machines varies greatly, but how much should you pay for a washing machine. It is possible to get a top load washer for around $200.00. That doesn’t mean that you should rush out and get one yet! Let’s take a look at how to pick out a new washer.

pay for a washing machine

1. Front-load or top-load is different to pay for a washing machine

This is a great place to start. Do you have a smaller washroom? Do you have a large family? If so, a front-loading machine may be the best way to go. Front-load washers can take up less room as you can stack the dryer on top of them.

If you have a large family, the best bet is the front-loader as well. It uses far less water than top loading machines. Belt drive top loaders can use almost twice as much water as a high efficiency (HE) washer. Going with the front loader will save quite a bit on the water bill; however, they do tend to take longer to finish washing.

2. What features do you require?

There are so many features available on today’s washing machines that it is almost easier to choose what you don’t want the machine to do. If you would like to be able to control your washer with your phone while you are away from the house, you can do so. Set up reminder alerts to keep yourself from forgetting about a load, as well as cleaning reminders.

There are a variety of cycles that some machines have, such as kids clothes and workout settings. Every manufacturer will offer different settings and features. Choose one based on what you need and what your budget is.

3. What type of tub do you want?

You can choose between plastic and stainless steel tubs. Stainless is more expensive, but will last longer and will stay/be easier to keep clean.

There are several other things to look for as well. Things like its annual energy consumption, water usage, warranty information, etc. Depending on your budget, you can purchase a front-load machine for around $500.00, though if you want all the bells and whistles, you are looking at closer to $1000-1500. That is just the cost of the washer, not including a dryer or a stand, if you want one.

Top loading machines can be the right option for you as well. Here are some advantages they have over front loaders:

  1. You don’t have to bend over to load them
  2. Some models will allow a larger load than front loaders
  3. Tend to be more powerful scrubbers, making them tougher on stains and dirt
  4. Many new top loaders are catching up to front loaders on the efficiency front.
  5. Usually less expensive than a front loader.

They aren’t perfect though. You can’t stack them, and they aren’t as nice looking as front loaders.

Either way, plan on at least $350 for a top loader and $500 for a front-loader. Plan on budgeting more if you want more options.
